Cairo Citadel is the highest point of the city, along with its beautiful mosque of Mohammed Ali, it has become a symbol of the city.

The place can be divided into 2 parts: the North wing and the South wing.

The north wing is surrounded by massive walls and towers, it always had a military function, while the south - with smaller, more irregular walls and towers, was the residence of the rulers.

Our tour of the citadel will take place along the South Wing, we will try to visit as many places as possible in just one day tour.

First of all, let's go to the alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali and take a look around.

In the courtyard there is a beautiful Turkish-style ritual bathing fountain, a clock tower donated by the French king Louis-Philippe to Muhammad Ali in 1846 in exchange for the obelisk of Ramses II.

The watch, unfortunately, does not work from the very first day of their arrival in Cairo.

Next, let's go inside the mosque and admire its exquisite decorations.

After leaving the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, let's go to the side of the gate known as Bab al-Alam, passing via them on the left side you can see the ruins of the famous striped palace of Qasr al-Ablak.

Now it is nothing more than just a name of once a grand palace, begun by Ashraf al-Khalil and completed by al-Nasir Mohammed in 1315.

On the same terrace we can see now already not in use military prison.

The prison has 40 cells in two rows, with an open corridor between them.

The oldest part dates back to Khediv Ismail, and it was completed in 1882.

The prison was closed in 1984 and became a museum, which we will visit (if it is open on the day of your tour).

Next, we will have a tour in the Military Museum, located in the famous palace of Muhammad Ali - known as al-Haramlek.

In front of the palace you will see a military exposition of ancient and modern weapons.

Today the pyramid is not accessible, as the chambers are submerged; in Petrie's time when the pyramid was discovered and excavated the burial chamber was nearly half submerged.

Nowadays we can see the pyramid from a distance like a natural plum-pudding hill but in reality it is just a ruinous lump of millions of dark mud bricks (long ago lost its limestone casing).

When we arrive at the pyramid's east side, we pass through the remains of a necropolis, which extends around to the north side.

This area can be explored but we have to beware of deep, vertical tomb shafts.

The pyramid was built to confuse tomb-robbers, with the entrance on the southern (instead of the usual northern) side and an intricate arrangement of internal passages.

When Petrie entered the pyramid in the 19th century, he found 2 sarcophagi, one for Amenemhat III and one for his daughter, Nefru-Ptah, who died suddenly while her father was still alive.

But the Hawara Pyramid is actually famous for another structure, is believed to be buried away from the foot of the pyramid to the south.

It is the Labyrinth, of which today is little to see: a few fragments of granite and limestone lotus columns litter the empty moonscape.

It is believed until now that the Labyrinth was the mortuary temple of Amenemhat III.

The place where we go with you was once the site of a significant Christian settlement.

Now there are several dozen churches (one of the oldest in Egypt) and monasteries, as well as the Coptic Museum.

Within the walls of the old Roman fortress of Babylon, we find the most ancient Coptic churches: Abu Serga, El Muallaca or the Hanging Church, it was recently renovated and reopened to the public.

Usually the old Coptic churches do not go out and do not differ from the neighboring houses.

One of the oldest churches in Cairo is St Sergius and St Bacchus Church, also known as Abu Sergius.

This church was burned and restored in the 8th century, and then again partially restored during Fatimids reign.

Despite the reconstruction, the Church of St. Sergius is still regarded as an example of the earliest churches in which the Copts worshiped.

Next, we will visit with you a very interesting place of the Coptic quarter - a synagogue!

The Ben Ezra Synagogue is the oldest Jewish temple in Egypt and the only active place of worship.

Further we will walk along the wall in which the Coptic churches are enclosed up to the ruins of Fort Babylon.

Initially, the fortress was quadrangular, 200 meters wide and 400 meters long, the walls of the fortress were 11 meters high and almost 3 meters thick.

At the end of the 19th century, the walls of the fortress were virtually intact, but today only a small part of it remains.

And finally, let's visit the Coptic Museum, which was established in 1910 thanks to Marcos Simayka Pasha.

The museum began to store artifacts relating to the Christian and Coptic history of Egypt.

Next let’s move to the main attraction of the area - the Step pyramid of Djoser and his mortuary temple.

We will walk around the temple and see some beautiful remains of the funerary temple.

Behind the complex we’ll find one more pyramid, now open to public Pyramid of Unas and a long coursway leading from the pyramid to some interesting tombs of the area.

If we move to another pyramid of the area, known as Pyramid of Teti, we can enter it and see how it looks like from inside.

The area contains some other pyramids as well.

Just across the Pyramid of Teti we find some tombs of Nobles that worth visit.

The biggest tomb here is the one of Mereruka (the tomb is required extra ticket to enter).

That's why let's 1st check tomb of Kagemni and a small chapel-tomb of Meryteti, son of Mereruka.

Our last stop will be at The Apis tomb known as the Serapeum.
